Steve Biko Housing Association welcome His Excellency
Mr. Seth George Ramocan on Thursday 8th June 2017.
Steve Biko Housing Association were honoured to have the opportunity of a visit to its Sheltered Scheme Hector Peterson Court, in Liverpool 8 from His Excellency Mr. Seth George Ramocan. His Excellency became Jamaica’s 13th High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in December 2016. He is also non-resident Ambassador to six countries namely; Ireland, the Republic of Finland, the Republic of Cyprus, as well as, the Kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
The visit was organised by Mr Garth Dallas. His Excellency and team met were greeted by Beverley Williams (Community Regeneration Manager) and Beverley Thompson (Hector Peterson Court Scheme Manager) from Steve Biko Housing and met with residents and volunteers of the Afro Caribbean and Friends Lunch Club at Hector Peterson Court. Beverley Thompson and her family are also members of the Jamaican Merseyside Association in Liverpool.
Discussion involved informing the group of this years’ Jamaica 55 Diaspora Conference to be held in Kingston Jamaica later in the year under the theme of ‘Partnering for Growth’ update on plans for development in Jamaica for health, Education, Social Enterprise Development and Housing and investment.
His Excellency was pleased to hear about the work of the Association and particularly work with the elders and diverse communities and aligned this to the new growth agenda for Jamaica.
The visit couldn’t not have happened without a talk about the work of Mr Herbie Higgins, who Mrs Vivienne Siva (Jamaica High Commission Community Relations Office) had met on a previous visit to Liverpool. Herbie’s work was recognised as valuable and significant to the connections between Jamaicans in Liverpool and Jamaica.
His Excellency has pledged support to enable Merseyside to re-launch and rejuvenate The Merseyside Jamaica Association with emphasis on engaging with families and young people of Jamaica decent in projects, activities and encouraged new connections through cultural, religion (churches), and creative and educational networking opportunities. His Excellency urged Garth to and those presence to begin to plan for a vibrant presence in Merseyside once again by organising a relaunch to enable local people to meet, offer their time, skills and resources to shaping new opportunities.
